The Associate Director is responsible for finance support, primarily for a pharmaceutical R&D function. Responsibilities will include budgeting, short and long-term forecasting, variance analysis, reporting and communication of results, as well as conducting analysis and use data to communicate and influence improvements in business performance.
Position requires an individual who is dynamic and has personal impact, and who can gain and maintain credibility across the R&D Business.
Position requires an individual who is a very strong communicator and influencer, able to draw out key risks and opportunities from complex business information.
It is imperative the incumbent have a demonstrated history of having a proactive approach, working with and influencing and challenging senior management. The individual should have a proven track record of making recommendations to management, and proactively driving business performance improvements, efficiencies, and cost savings.
Ideal candidate will perform the following:
* Complete and accurate preparation and presentation of budgets and forecasts, including outlining of key assumptions used for both budgets and goals and objectives
* Develop and maintain in conjunction with Accounting and Clinical Team a detailed model tracking key elements of clinical trial contracts, historical expenses and forecasted expenses for each component of clinical trials. On a monthly basis, update model with actual expenses and adjust forecast accordingly
* Monthly variance analysis vs. budget/forecast with detailed explanations and analysis as to impact on quarter, remainder of the year and longer term forecasts as applicable
* Assist in portfolio management and pipeline valuations, including long-term R&D spend and probability of success factors
* Assist with analysis and communication of analysis in a way to improve business performance
* Preparation and presentation of monthly financial reports for the management of functions in a way to provide insight to finance and business
* Identify and drive cost savings opportunities working with purchasing as needed
* Preparation of long-term financial plans and revisions thereto
* Analyze key contracts and licensing agreements.
* Develop and enhance forecasting and accounting processes to improve both accuracy and efficiency
* Assist in ERP implementation and changes to ERP going forward as it relates to supporting functions
* Strict adherence to internal controls and processes to ensure there no significant accounting adjustments after completion of close process and no significant surprises

Strong knowledge of accounting, forecasting of R&D expenses, systems and processes in pharmaceutical industry. Strong knowledge of research and development functions, including clinical trial process and pre-clinical activities in pharmaceutical industry.
Strong accounting, financial and analytical skills, including detailed modeling and tracking of clinical trial contracts in pharmaceutical industry. Strong organizational and communication skills.
Be a team player, partner to both finance and business and able to work independently; able to prioritize work; work well with entire organizational staff; ability to apply new innovative ideas to provide comprehensive solutions. Able to use data in a way to communicate and influence business to improve business performance. Able to analyze and provide insight to add value to business. Able to travel as required.
Education: BA in Accounting or Finance, preferably CPA and MBA in finance
Experience: 10+ years preferred related experience, including 5 years working in finance role in support of R&D in pharmaceutical industry
